"He's Not A Quiet Guy": Danny Green Makes Startling Revelation About Tim Duncan

In an era when the loud personalities of Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson captivated the NBA world, Tim Duncan embodied quiet strength. Known for his stoic expression and fundamentally sound game, Duncan made a non-flashy but nevertheless compelling argument as one of the greatest ever by helping build the Spurs dynasty.

Can anyone imagine a “vocal” Duncan? Danny Green doesn’t have to conjure a fantasy. As a matter of fact, he saw and heard it for years.

Appearing on a recent episode of Byron Scott’s “Fast Break” podcast, the former Spurs guard shattered the longstanding view that most fans have when it comes to his iconic teammate.

“Surprisingly, people think Timmy is quiet, but he’s not a quiet guy. He talks,” Green revealed. “He doesn’t really talk a lot in the media. He was a leader vocally, by action, on the court.”

Green, who spent the better part of seven seasons playing alongside Duncan in San Antonio, did admit that the Big Fundamental had a way with actions more so than words. The three-time NBA champion shared an example that illustrated how a simple gesture from Duncan did so much talking.

“There was a stat that people took on how many times the Spurs shook hands during warm-ups,” Green shared. “You realize how much that has an effect on your team and chemistry. Timmy was always touching.”

This anecdote from Green is the latest in a long line of folk tales surrounding San Antonio’s folk hero. Duncan’s propensity for shaking hands is thematically consistent with other stories that have been told in the past, including accounts that longtime Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich would yell at Duncan the same way he yelled at reserve players. By regularly taking Pop’s criticism with no complaint, Duncan set an example for every teammate on the Spurs bench.

Habits like these helped Duncan rack up accolades in his Hall of Fame career: five NBA titles, three Finals MVP awards, and 15 All-Star selections, just to name a few. Duncan is as renowned for his persona as his resume, but if Green had his way, fans would wrap their heads around the vocal version of the Big Fundamental.
