Orlando Magic Forward To Make Return In Front Of Home Crowd
Jan 15, 2026
After sixteen games on the sidelines, Franz Wagner is set to return for Thursday's game in Berlin against the Memphis Grizzlies, and the timing couldn't be more perfect. Not only is Orlando sitting sixth in the Eastern Conference at 22–18, but Wagner gets to make his comeback in front of a true home crowd, as he and his brother Moritz (also on the Magic) grew up playing basketball in Berlin.
In Wagner's month-long absence due to an ankle injury suffered against the New York Knicks, the Magic went 8-8 without him, which shows the depth this young roster has developed. Guys like newcomer Desmond Bane and Anthony Black have stepped up with Wagner on the sidelines, but it has been obvious that what was missing has been secondary playmaking and another guy who can create his own shot when the half-court offense stalls.
Wagner's return should immediately ease the offensive burden on Paolo Banchero, who's been shouldering the load as the primary creator. Before his injury, Wagner averaged 22.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting 49 percent from the field. Having the 24-year-old forward back means better spacing, more ball movement, and, more importantly, another reliable crunch-time option. The Magic have been solid defensively all season, but they've struggled to consistently crack 110 points some nights. Wagner's versatility should help create easier scoring opportunities.

The main issue for the first couple of weeks is rust. Over a month away from game action is significant, and it will likely take Wagner time to find his rhythm, especially with monitored minutes. Adding to the storyline, older brother Moritz recently made his season debut after recovering from a torn ACL, creating a special moment for both brothers to be on the floor together in their hometown.
