Head Coach Draymond Green? Warriors Star Believes That It Can Happen

If you ask Golden State Warriors fans to pick the most vocal person on the team, there’s a chance that a lot of them won’t go with head coach Steve Kerr. For better or for worse, the winner of this poll might very well be the outspoken Draymond Green.
Brilliant basketball minds with a fearless voice tend to have an aptitude for coaching. The question is, would Green ever consider following in Kerr’s footsteps, whether as Warriors head coach or a mentor somewhere else?
Apparently, he’s been thinking about it. “If you had asked me two years ago, I would’ve said, ‘Hell no,” Green told reporters at a recent media session. “But, as you get closer to the end, you start thinking, what is it that I really want to do? ”
As far as coaching skills are concerned, the former Defensive Player of the Year has shown that he’s comfortable with explaining Xs and Os to his teammates, not to mention giving them an emotional push when they need it the most. Whether it’s fiery encouragement or fearless admonition, Green has not been shy when it comes to pushing the buttons of the athletes he shares a locker room with.
These are seeds for a coaching career that Green might just be willing to cultivate. “You start to learn more about it and dig deeper. As you get older, you get closer with your coaching staff,” he admitted. “I’m not gonna sit here and tell you that I’m gonna coach when I’m done. But I’m not gonna tell you no anymore.”

Green, a four-time NBA champion, might as well have prepared his audition tape by starting his own podcast, “The Draymond Green Show,” in 2022. That same year, he signed a deal with TNT Sports to become a part-time analyst, interacting with the “Inside the NBA” crew as his schedule permits.
On the other hand, one has to wonder if his track record of clashing with Kerr and other Warriors teammates might be a red flag for teams in the future. Just last month, Green infamously walked out of a timeout after a verbal altercation with Kerr, who loudly wondered how he was supposed to coach the temperamental star.
There’s a level of irony, then, to Green eventually occupying the seat of head coach. But there’s no denying that he has the chops for one of the toughest jobs in the basketball world.
