New Report Reveals Why Dillon Brooks Was Traded By The Memphis Grizzlies
Jan 15, 2026
Dillon Brooks is one of the more controversial players in the NBA, but everywhere he goes, success seems to follow, as he has been defined as a 'culture setter' by those in Phoenix this year. In Memphis, his teams were good, then in Houston, things turned around, and now with the Suns, the team is having an incredibly unexpected campaign through the first half of the season.
As a result of the success following him, many have questioned why he was moved from that team in the first place. The Houston trade makes sense, as the team acquired Kevin Durant in the deal, but as for Memphis, it continues to be a head-scratcher, and now, Tim MacMahon has revealed why Brooks was moved.
“Memphis made no attempt to retain Brooks in free agency, in part, sources said, because the front office was concerned that his incessant trash talk and inflammatory antics had become a bad influence on the team's young core. Brooks, a second-round pick in 2017 who emerged as a leader during the young Grizzlies' rise, had become emblematic of a cocky team that didn't back up its bold talk.”
According to MacMahon, the front office and coaching staff believed Brooks was a bad influence on the young core, despite helping them to their most successful period in recent franchise history.

Ultimately, this was a ridiculous decision by the Grizzlies, as they've struggled to have any success since Brooks' departure, and with Ja Morant likely on the way out soon, this is a team that's a long way from contending once again.
