Anthony Davis' Trade Value Has Dropped Since Injury
Jan 15, 2026
The Dallas Mavericks have made it clear they want to take their team in a new direction. Now that it is clear that Cooper Flagg is this franchise’s future, the Mavericks' ownership and front office have decided they want to build towards that future. This means potentially trading some of their valuable older players. Anthony Davis was set to be the hottest item on the NBA trade market until just a few days ago. Davis went down with a hand injury that is going to force him to miss significant time.

NBA insider Shams Charania spoke about how the Davis trade talks have changed since he went down with this most recent hand injury.
"But for the business of basketball, let's flip there until the Mavericks are having renewed trade talks around Davis with multiple interested teams. Two of the foremost teams there are Atlanta and Toronto. But one thing that has been made clear in the last few days from people that I talked to is the cost is most certainly going to be lower for the Mavericks than it was even a month ago, when the Mavericks were hedging that Davis would rack up games, would improve his value, and it could go up and up in terms of what they could get."
For the Mavericks, it may no longer be worth it to trade Davis. With his injury dropping the demand and therefore the potential returns on trading him, they may be better off holding him through the rest of this season.
Keeping Davis also would help the Mavericks continue to tank and land another top lottery pick in next year’s draft. That alone could be worth holding onto him for.
