Kevin Durant Reveals How Long He Plans to Play Before Retirement
Sep 19, 2025
Kevin Durant is already one of the greatest NBA players ever. If he retired tomorrow, he would probably be regarded as a top-25 player of all time. You cannot argue with his consistent greatness over his long and successful career.
Because Durant already has an MVP and multiple NBA championships, his legacy is cemented. Still, he is only 36 years old and looks like he has a lot more buckets left to get. Last season, he averaged 26.6 points, six rebounds, and 4.2 assists on 52.7% shooting from the field and 43% from three. Those are crazy numbers for a player of any age. Even crazier for someone in their late 30s.

In a recent interview, Durant was asked just how long he plans to continue playing. Here were Durant’s thoughts on retirement:
“As long as I can. I mean, I haven’t put a number on it. I obviously think about retirement every year and you think about what it would be like…I don’t even want to think about it right now. I still enjoy going to the gym. I still enjoy that struggle of getting better every day and grinding as an NBA player. So hopefully it’s in my 40s, I can play until then.”
This shouldn’t surprise most NBA fans. Durant is known to be obsessed with basketball and not much else. It is hard to imagine him retiring before his body tells him he absolutely has to.
Despite suffering a torn Achilles tendon a few years ago, he has bounced back and looks nearly as good as new.
So expect Durant to be around for a while longer. He may no longer be a top-10 player in the league, but he is still a star. That star will be on full display this season as he tries to lead the young Houston Rockets back to the NBA Finals.
