JJ Redick Signs Extension as Lakers Head Coach

Last year, the Los Angeles Lakers signed JJ Redick to be their new Head Coach, bringing in the former guard in his first role as a coach in basketball. His first season was quite a successful one, with the team going 50-32 in the regular season before falling in the NBA Playoffs in round one against the Timberwolves.

Despite signing a four-year deal before ever appearing as the Lakers’ Head Coach, the organization has now officially extended the young Head Coach.

His original contract was four years, $32 million, so it's unclear exactly how much this new deal is worth, but given the team’s success in the first year and the fact that he's just 41 years of age, this extension is simply a no-brainer. Now, the team has locked in their star of the future in Luka Dončić, along with a young, beloved Head Coach, and even with LeBron James' future up in the air, this type of stability is good for the Lakers.

While there's always criticism that any coach can find success with a LeBron-led team, Redick showed that he's a different breed from recent Lakers coaches, and given the history of iconic coaches in the organization’s history, he's got the chance to become one of those. Ultimately, it's unclear why exactly the Lakers wanted to get an extension done just one year after signing a four-year deal, but they clearly believe in Redick as a key piece of their future, and now he's locked in long-term.
