Giannis v. Milwaukee: Will The Bucks Shut Down The Greek Freak?
Mar 20, 2026
The Giannis Antetokounmpo saga never ends.
After months of speculation about Antetokounmpo’s departure from Milwaukee, the Greek Freak reportedly wants to play in this final stretch of the Bucks’ season.
According to ESPN’s sources, the Bucks intend to shut down Antetokounmpo for the rest of the 2025-26 campaign after his latest left knee injury. Antetokounmpo, who turned 31 last December, has been troubled by one injury after another in what can only be described as a snakebit season for his team.
Bizarrely, the Bucks would be incentivized to keep Antetokounmpo on the shelf and maintain their status quo. At the moment, the Bucks (28-40) occupy the no. 11 spot in the Eastern Conference, which means that their trajectory is the draft lottery. Antetokounmpo’s presence on the court could “jeopardize” their chances of losing, which would be their ticket to solid positioning in this year’s NBA Draft.
In fact, forget “solid” positioning. Just this past year, the Dallas Mavericks had unimpressive odds of nabbing the no. 1 draft pick, yet the lottery balls wound up in their favor and they ended up acquiring the generational talents of Cooper Flagg. The Bucks are hoping that a Darryn Peterson or an AJ Dybantsa will land in Milwaukee this way.
On the other end, what exactly could be driving Antetokounmpo to target a comeback at this late point of the season? Of course, a two-time MVP like Antetokounmpo could hardly be blamed for wanting to return simply because of love for the game. At the same time, the strained relationship between the Greek Freak and the team that drafted him 13 years ago could also play into this situation.

Is Antetokounmpo trying to antagonize the Bucks in order to force their hand into a trade? In the weeks approaching the trade deadline last month, the entire NBA community waited for developments coming out of Milwaukee as they weighed their options for their disgruntled star. Ultimately, no deal materialized, but at this point, Antetokounmpo could be sending a strong message:
Trade me this summer. Once and for all.
Has the NBA community seen the last of Antetokounmpo in a Bucks uniform? That could very well be the case.
