Donovan Mitchell Reveals His Allegience For USA vs. World All-Star Game Format
Jan 16, 2026
Donovan Mitchell has been one of the best scorers in the entire NBA since arriving in the league with the Utah Jazz, and since moving to the Cleveland Cavaliers, he's taken his game to another level entirely. This season, Spida is averaging 30 points on 49% shooting from the field, lining him up to be an All-Star for the seventh time in his young career.
This year, however, the NBA has a new format for the All-Star Game, with the league looking to copy the NHL by introducing a USA vs. the World game rather than the traditional East vs. West. That has some fans immensely excited, and given how much talent there is on the World side, this should be a very competitive showdown.
While Mitchell was born and raised in the USA, according to him, he'd like to represent his heritage of Panama, as he revealed in a recent interview.
"My grandmother, being from Panama, she came over here on a boat. No plan, no money. And two generations later, here we are."
As of right now, it's unclear exactly what a player needs to do to qualify to be a part of the world team, and while this is his desire, he was born and raised in the USA, which may force the league to make him play for the United States squad.

Ultimately, this could make or break the All-Star format for a long time to come, and given how many players have heritage beyond the USA, it will be interesting to see how many players try this.
