Spurs Players Who Will Step Up During Victor Wembanyama's Injury

The San Antonio Spurs have a big gap to fill. An alien-sized one. Victor Wembanyama is set to miss at least a couple of weeks with a calf strain, and the Spurs are going to have to look elsewhere for both offensive and defensive production in his absence. Here are a couple of players we expect to take a huge leap while Wembanyama recovers from injury.

Luke Kornet

Luke Kornet was signed in San Antonio partly for this reason. He is probably an average-level starting center in the NBA, but the Spurs signed him not only to back up Wemby but to play alongside him in some formidable double big lineups.

While Kornet has only appeared in six games so far this season, he looks like the perfect fit next to Wemby. He is averaging 10.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists, all career highs. With Wemby out, we expect Kornet to start and continue to put up solid numbers, as his chemistry working with the first unit is already there.

De’Aaron Fox

This may seem obvious, but Fox is going to be the key to the Spurs surviving without Wemby in the lineup. While the fit with Wembanyama hasn’t been as incredible as many were hoping, Fox has the ability to carry the team while he is out.

Fox is averaging 22 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game so far this season. He has only played in five games, as he missed the first part of the year recovering from a hamstring injury. Fox was rusty but is finally starting to hit his stride. Expect him to explode over the next few weeks with the keys to the Spurs’ offense in his hands.
