Billy Donovan Discusses the Bulls Rebuild
Feb 6, 2026
Have the Chicago Bulls officially started their rebuild? For years, the Bulls have been stuck in the middle of the NBA standings. A place that no team wants to be. They haven’t been good enough to make a playoff run, but they also haven’t been bad enough to land a real rebuilding piece in the draft. Many have criticized the Bulls for holding onto assets for way too long and receiving little in return for them once they actually do trade them.
For example, the Bulls have now traded Jimmy Butler, Zach LaVine, Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso, Coby White, Nikola Vucevic, Lauri Markkanen, and lost DeMar DeRozan and received a sum of one first-round pick.

Still, with the Bulls' trades at the deadline, they have signaled to the league that they are finally ready to commit to a rebuild.
Billy Donovan spoke about the Bulls’ rebuild and how he’s hoping things turn around quickly.
"To be honest with you, most of my time in college was to rebuild teams and rosters, it was. We have to sit down as an organization, quite honestly, myself, ownership, and front office, and find the direction, the clarity, of, again, the roster is kind of flipped, right? I've talked to you guys about what's important to me is the mentality, the competitiveness, that kind of stuff, and things can happen quickly too. Look at what Detroit was able to do. They were really bad for a while, and they took off and have done really well. You look at a team like Boston, where they shedded a bunch of salary cap, and people thought they weren't going to be any good, and now they're second in the East, so things can happen pretty quickly."
Hopefully, the Bulls can follow in the Pistons' footsteps and become a top team in the East within a few years. Right now, they certainly don't project to, but as Donovan said, "things can happen pretty quickly."
