Spurs Become Even Scarier With This Aggressive Trade Idea
Dec 30, 2025
The San Antonio Spurs might be the best team in the league. That’s what happens when you take down the champs three separate times. While they entered the season hoping to be a feisty playoff team, the expectations have now been raised.
But do they have enough to go all the way? Some think the Spurs should use their stockpile of assets to grab another piece and go all-in on a championship run.

Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report wrote about “5 Blockbuster NBA Trades That Should Happen After Christmas,” and he had one idea for the Spurs that would make them the favorite to win the NBA Championship.
“San Antonio Spurs receive: Trey Murphy III.
New Orleans Pelicans receive: Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, and 2031 first-round pick (via SAS or SAC)
Why San Antonio does it: While a mega-move for Giannis Antetokounmpo might be too costly for the Spurs, they shouldn't be opposed to dealing altogether. If they could upgrade the roster without draining their account, they'd grant Victor Wembanyama a shot at this year's title run without throwing obstacles in front of future pursuits.”
If the Spurs were able to land Trey Murphy III, they’d have to be considered the favorites to win the NBA title. Sure, the Oklahoma City Thunder are still the team to beat, but the Spurs have already done it. With Murphy, they would add another scoring punch to their offense, making them even more dangerous than they already are.
Why not give it a try? Murphy is also still relatively young; he could fit with the rest of the Spurs timeline. Getting rid of only one first-round pick and two role players that don’t play a vital role on the roster seems like a very palatable price. If the Pelicans are willing to get rid of Murphy for this price, the Spurs need to make this trade.
