PJ Washington Speaks About His Budding Chemistry With Mavericks Rookie

The Dallas Mavericks are not doing well. Despite their veteran roster, as of Monday, they are 4–10, which puts them as the 13th seed in the Western Conference. For a team that just two seasons ago was in the NBA Finals, this is not how they wanted to start things off.

The result of this slow start has been the firing of their general manager, Nico Harrison, and rumors that the team may be ready to trade some of their veterans in order to better position themselves for a future led by number-one overall pick Cooper Flagg.

One of these potential veteran trade candidates, PJ Washington, recently spoke about his relationship with Flagg and how it is developing earlier in their tenure together.

“I think it’s developing really well, just trying to read how guys are playing him and I’m trying to give him an overlook of everybody who’s guarding him, telling him their strengths, their weaknesses, and which way to force them… Obviously he has a long way to go, but he’s going to be a phenomenal player in this league… Just trying to be that mentor for him and just give him all the information I know.”

One way to keep yourself in Dallas (although we’ve seen that nobody is truly safe there) is by hitching your wagon to Flagg. Flagg is not only the favorite to win the Rookie of the Year, but also the man whom the Mavericks are hoping can lead their franchise back to the NBA Finals in years to come.

While PJ is nine years older than Flagg, he still has a lot of productive years left and is a good veteran for Flagg to learn from. And if Flagg lets the Mavericks know that he appreciates PJ’s veteran leadership, there’s a good chance he could survive the potential fire sale.
