Kevin Durant Makes NBA History with Most Recent Contract Extension
Oct 20, 2025
Kevin Durant is undoubtedly one of the greatest NBA players of all time. He probably lands somewhere in the top 25 ever and is easily a top-five scorer of all time. Durant is 8th on the all-time scoring list and 6th on the list if you include the playoffs.
Durant has won Finals and league MVP awards, is a four-time scoring champion, 15-time All-Star, and 11-time All-NBA honoree. Durant’s accolades continue to pile up with every elite season he puts together.
Still, despite a career of incredible accomplishments, Durant doesn’t hold many basketball records by himself.
He has the second-most consecutive seasons averaging at least 25 points per game, with 16 seasons, second only to LeBron James, who has 20 straight seasons with that scoring mark. He is tied for the most Olympic gold medals in U.S. basketball history. He is the points-per-game leader for three franchises (Thunder, Suns, Nets) but isn’t the franchise scoring leader for any of them.

When Durant signed his new $90 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets, he finally grabbed an NBA record for himself. He now has the highest career earnings of any NBA player, with over $598 million. He surpasses LeBron James, who earned $583.9 million in his career.
While this record may not be as impressive as one that actually involves playing basketball, it is still significant. It not only represents Durant’s sustained dominance throughout his incredible career but also serves as a nod to his and his team’s business acumen.
