Chris Paul Announces He Will Reitre At The End Of The Season

On Saturday, November 22, 2025, LA Clippers guard Chris Paul announced, by way of an emotional social media post, that at 40 years old, he will be playing his final NBA season. As one of the great point guards of his, or any, era, Paul’s 21st NBA campaign likely will not result in a fairytale ending with an NBA title, but his career is still worthy of a first-ballot entry into the Hall of Fame.

Selected by the New Orleans Hornets with the fourth pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, Paul has collected an impressive résumé of individual accolades throughout his career, including 12 All-Star Game appearances, 11 All-NBA Teams, 9 All-Defensive Teams, six-time steals leader, five-time assists leader, and the 2006 Rookie of the Year.

Appearing in 15 NBA playoffs with five of his seven teams, Paul’s career has been defined by leadership, playmaking, and defense. Averaging 16.9 points, 9.2 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and two steals per game over the course of the regular season, Paul stepped his game up in the postseason, averaging 20 points, 8.3 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.9 steals. Currently second to John Stockton in both career assists and steals, Paul has proven to be a two-way player his entire career.

Despite Paul being 40 years old, the Clippers took a chance on bringing Paul back to LA in hopes that a veteran lineup would help lead to the team’s first NBA banner. However, this season has been bittersweet. While fans and the organization may have been hoping to mimic the success of the “Lob City” era, when Paul, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan were one of the league’s most exciting trios, such has not been the case with an older, more grounded lineup of James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and Brook Lopez.

When Paul eventually walks off the court for the final time this spring, the league will lose one of its greatest competitors and most complete and traditional floor generals. Ring or no ring, the “Point God” has earned his place among the all-time greats.
