Brandin Podziemski Wants To Inherit The Golden State Warriors From Steph Curry

Following in Steph Curry's footsteps sounds like a pipe dream at best. But don’t tell that to Brandin Podziemski.
Despite playing just two seasons thus far in the NBA, Podziemski has made a bold statement regarding his iconic teammate. In an interview with Nick Friedell of The Athletic, Podz admitted that he’s been working on earning Curry’s trust to set up his long-term future with the Golden State Warriors.
To put it bluntly, the 22-year-old guard wants the Warriors to be his team someday.
“When they [Curry and the Warriors veterans] leave this thing, they got to leave it with somebody,” Podziemski told Friedell. “How can I have their trust? And they can go to (owner) Joe (Lacob) and (general manager) Mike (Dunleavy) and be like, ‘Hey, we want to leave it with him. He’s going to continue what we’re leaving.’”
How determined is Podz to achieve this goal? Very determined, apparently. “I think about that all time, and I set myself up in that position, to have that. And there’s a lot of other things than just skill that you need to be in that position,” he said.
Living up to Curry’s legacy in the Bay Area is a Herculean task for any young aspirant in the NBA. But, from the looks of it, the former Finals MVP’s insatiable competitiveness is rubbing off on Podziemski, who was selected 19th overall by the Warriors in the 2023 NBA Draft.

The former Santa Clara standout has a long way to go before putting up Curry-like numbers, but at the very least, he has carved himself a niche in Steve Kerr’s rotation, averaging better than 26 minutes per game in the last two seasons. Notably, Podziemski’s 45.0% career shooting clip is not that far off from Curry’s 47.1% field goal percentage in his first two years.
With veterans like Buddy Hield, Jimmy Butler, and Seth Curry expected to play major minutes at the wing positions, Podz will have to beef up his numbers even more so that he can stay on the court this season. By playing the long game and establishing himself as an asset for consistent winning, Podziemski can move closer to achieving his dream of becoming a main man for the Warriors.
