Atlanta Hawks Looking To Move On From Their Franchise Star

Trae Young arrived in Atlanta as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, and since that point, he's been a star for the Hawks while becoming the face of the franchise. Through his first 7.5 seasons, Young has been an All-Star four times while averaging 25 points and 10 assists for this team, allowing them to build a solid team around him.

However, the Hawks are seemingly growing frustrated with the lack of playoff success with this team, and with the likes of Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels to build around, they're potentially looking to move on from Young. That suggestion comes from ESPN's Tim MacMahon, who reveals that the team hasn't been trying to sign him to an extension, and as a result, is looking for any way to move on from Young.

“The Hawks certainly are indicating that they're looking for the exit ramp with Trae Young. They did not make any attempt to get him signed to an extension. When that's the case with your face of the franchise, that's a pretty clear message that the end could be near.”

On paper, given Young's production, this idea seems crazy, but with the team struggling to put together any post-season success, failing to make it past the first round since 2021, moving in a different direction makes sense.

It's unclear as of right now who would look to make a move for Young, but given that he can still be very productive in the right role, if the Hawks are truly motivated, they could certainly get a deal done.
