Young Guard Agrees to Buyout After Being Acquired by the Washington Wizards
Aug 20, 2025
Blake Wesley was a late first-round pick of the San Antonio Spurs back in the 2022 NBA Draft, and throughout his three years in the league, the young guard has shown plenty of promise. However, he's yet to take a major leap forward, and as a result, he was traded to the Washington Wizards, with the Spurs looking to get more experience and talent into their lineup.
At 22-years of age, Wesley fits the perfect timeline for the Wizards, a team that are rebuilding around the likes of Bub Carrington, Alex Sarr, A.J. Johnson, Cam Whitmore and Kyshawn George. Surprisingly however, the team have now waived the former No. 25 overall draft pick, making him officially a free agent.
This was certainly a surprise move for the Wizards, as many saw Wesley as a potentially talented piece coming off the bench for this young, inexperienced squad, but the team have now narrowed down their core, with Wesley not expected to be a part of it. This past season, Wesley saw the lowest amount of shots in his three NBA seasons, averaging 4 points a night on just 3.2 shots a game, but with 1 board and 2 assists per game, he's flashed the potential to one day be a solid role player in the NBA.
It's unclear exactly where Wesley's next team will be and whether he'll get a shot at significant playing time in the NBA after tallying just 12 minutes a night in 2024/25, but with talent and a bright future at just 22-years of age, there's going to be many more opportunities for Wesley to find a role in the NBA.
