Netflix Set To Officially Cancel NBA Based Show 'Starting 5' After Just Two Seasons
Nov 26, 2025
In recent years, the sporting world has been thrust onto Netflix to some great success, with the show Quarterback especially garnering plenty of viewers. That show followed around five QBs during their NFL seasons, picking up plenty of interest from fans as they got a behind-the-scenes view of what life in the NFL is like at the most important position.
Following that success, Netflix moved on to the NBA, following around five players for two seasons with Starting 5, but unfortunately, the success wasn't the same. The first season struggled to capture fans' attention, as did Quarterback, and in the second season, they added their biggest star, LeBron James.
Unfortunately, that didn't quite help, as Netflix is now set to cancel the show after two seasons, according to Sports Business Journal.
It's unclear just how bad the viewership numbers were for either Starting 5 season, but given the popularity of the NBA, it's a surprise that those fans didn't translate to the Netflix show. That comes even with the star power of Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, and Jimmy Butler, but at the end of the day, it appears as though behind-the-scenes looks at the NBA just aren't as compelling as the NFL.
Only time will tell if Netflix looks to find a different type of way to capitalize on the NBA's popularity in North America, but for now, it was a massive flop, so it's unlikely they will try anything new anytime soon.
