This Former Kings Star Thinks Team Should Retire His Jersey

During an appearance on the Straight Game Podcast, former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins made the case for the Sacramento Kings to retire his jersey.

The Sacramento Kings do not have the most impressive history. The team is one of 10 to have never won an NBA championship. The Kings have retired 11 numbers in franchise history, with the two most recent players to be honored being Chris Webber and Peja Stojaković.

Cousins was certainly a major part of some of the best Kings teams since the days of Webber and Stojaković. He was drafted by the team fifth overall in 2010 and made 3 All-Star teams during his time with the franchise. Cousins' 21.1 PPG as a King ranks seventh in franchise history, as does his 9,984 total points. Cousins is fifth in rebounds per game average with 10.8, and his 5,056 total rebounds rank sixth.

Cousins said during the podcast:

"Obviously, it would be an honor. That was something that I definitely wanted and strived for as far as why I tried to go out and perform every single night. Accolade-wise, I feel like I did all the right things while I was in that jersey … As far as All-Stars, as far as All-NBA selections, numbers, gold medals. I put my work in."

The former star center, who also spent time with the Pelicans, Warriors, Rockets, Clippers, Bucks, and Nuggets, is clearly one of the greatest players in Kings history. The only questions are whether he played long enough and whether the way he left the team will leave.
