Former Hornets Point Guard Gives Advice to LaMelo Ball

The Charlotte Hornets seem to have figured something out. As of Wednesday, they are the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 28-31. While this doesn’t seem too impressive, it isn’t telling the whole story. Over the last 15 games, the Hornets are actually the third-best team in the league with a record of 12-3. During that span, they are second in offensive rating and ninth in defensive rating. That’s the framework for a really good team.

Former Charlotte Hornets point guard Muggsy Bogues was recently asked about the Hornets success as well as any advice he could give LaMelo Ball, the team’s young star point guard.

“The guys have been playing well. Health is the key, if the guys are healthy with LaMelo, Miles, Miller, Kon and Diabate all on the same floor at the same time. A lot of success has been having those guys. Unfortunately, we have the suspension, but I still think they bounce back. They just got a big win against Atlanta. I think the guys are really looking forward to the last stretch of the season…Health is always a key for him. As you can see, how he’s able to galvanize the guys and get them to rally to play some great basketball here in this stretch. Melo is a great leader. I’m loving his leadership personally.”

While many criticize LaMelo’s decision-making or attention to detail (especially on defense), Bogues’ advice has more to do with something that is harder to control. LaMelo hasn’t been healthy for an entire season more than one time in his whole career. If LaMelo can figure out how to stay on the floor consistently, he could help the Hornets reach new heights.
