The Chicago Bulls Announce That Team Will Retire Derrick Rose's Number

The Chicago Bulls announced that they will honor beloved point guard Derrick Rose by retiring his jersey during a ceremony in January 2026.

Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement about the honor:

"Derrick is both a hometown hero and a symbol of an entire era of Bulls basketball. Retiring a jersey recognizes a player’s impact beyond on-court achievements. It honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the organization and forged deep, lasting connections with fans. It recognizes that emotional bond and the great influence a player has had on the team and organization’s identity. We are proud to add Derrick to the elite group of players – Jerry Sloan, Bob Love, Michael Jordan, and Scottie Pippen – whose jerseys have been officially retired by the Chicago Bulls."

As the first star for the team in the post-Jordan era, Rose represents a very important figure in Bulls history. He was the team's first overall selection in the 2008 NBA Draft. By 2010, he was an NBA All-Star.

Rose's best season as a pro came in 2010-2011 when he averaged 25.0 points per game with 4.1 rebounds and 7.7 assists. For his efforts, the Bulls point guard was named the NBA MVP.

Rose would suffer some terrrible injuries and never reached the heights of his early career again. That doesn't mean he wasn't productive as he provided valuable leadership for several NBA teams along with scoring punch off the bench. The Bulls will retire Rose's jersey during a game against the New York Knicks, another team for whom the point guard was a key player.
