Report: Cam Thomas Could Accept Nets Qualifying Offer

According to a report from Third Apron's Yossi Gozlan, Cam Thomas could end up simply accepting the Brooklyn Nets qualifying offer, which would make him an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

This offseason began with four talented restricted free agents: Thomas, Josh Giddey, Quentin Grimes, and Jonathan Kuminga. Kuminga has received the strongest interest of the group, but none have signed a deal with anyone yet.

Thomas expected to hit free agency and land a major deal. He put up strong numbers in Brooklyn last year, averaging 24 points per game with 3.8 assists and 3.2 rebounds. Critics say he was just putting up empty stats on a bad team.

The NBA seems to feel the same way, as a deal has not materialized, and the shooting guard has lost much of his negotiating power. Gozlan wrote:

"Thomas and the Nets are reportedly very far apart in negotiations. This has led to speculation that he may accept his qualifying offer. He has until October 1 to accept it or let it expire. The Nets would have the option to extend it if they’d like, but he’d remain a restricted free agent if they don’t."

This has been a tough offseason for Thomas, who has angrily responded to his critics at times. On the bright side, he is still young and is a very talented scorer. If he accepts the Nets’ qualifying offer, he will be able to become an unrestricted free agent next year, and that could be his best option.
