Here's What Kevin Durant Had To Say About The Explosive "KD Files"

After the All-Star festivities came to a close, it seemed that Kevin Durant had some explaining to do.

Right before the “USA vs. The World” games tipped off, the so-called “KD Files” took social media by storm. These leaked private messages, which supposedly came from a burner account handled by Durant, revealed candid feelings towards former and current teammates of the two-time NBA champion.

Whether or not these leaks are genuine, it was highly unlikely that the KD Files wouldn’t come up during the Houston Rockets’ next practice session. Sure enough, at a media availability on Wednesday, Durant himself was asked by a reporter if the gethigher77 account indeed belonged to him.

“I know you’re going to ask these questions, but I’m not here to get into Twitter nonsense,” Durant replied. “I’m just here to focus on the season.”

When asked about his teammates’ thoughts, KD added, “My teammates know what it is. We’ve been locked in the whole season. We’ve been enjoying our break, and we had a great practice today.”

As civil as Durant sounded, it’s hard to ignore the fact that he did not directly deny the allegations that he was the individual behind the gethigher77 account. Based on screenshots that went viral, it was gethigher77 who complained about playing with Alperen Sengun, calling him “a franchise player [that] can’t shoot or defend.” It was also gethigher77 who labeled Jabari Smith Jr. “lowkey r*tarded.”

It was one thing for the burner account to take shots at Steph Curry and the Warriors organization. It was another thing to verbally bury young players like Sengun and Smith, who will potentially be part of the Rockets’ core for years to come.

In fairness to Durant, there is no definitive proof that establishes him as the true identity of gethigher77. However, it’s worth noting that he has admitted to using burner accounts in the past, as far back as his stint with the Warriors. At the time, KD described burner accounts as a platform for him to freely express his thoughts as he conversed with friends.

Strangely enough, that’s exactly what the KD Files show: a free-wheeling chat in which an NBA player purportedly lowers his defenses and just shoots the breeze. Whether or not Durant’s teammates believe that he is gethigher77, Rockets fans are hoping that there will be no adverse impact on the team’s performance the rest of the way.
