New Report Reveals The Latest On Potential NBA Expansion
Mar 16, 2026
For quite some time now, expansion has been a huge topic in the NBA, and with fans calling for the return of the Seattle Supersonics, it's seemed to be just a matter of when, not if the league expands from 30 teams. In recent months, that chatter has simply gotten louder and louder, to the point where many believed there would be an announcement made by the league before the summer.
Now, ESPN's Shams Charania has revealed the latest, and for those looking for the NBA to expand once again, his report is very good news. According to Charania, the league are set to vote on expansion at the Board of Governors meeting, set to take place on March 24th and 25th.
On top of that, those that are pushing for expansion are eyeing the 2028/29 season as the perfect time to bring back the Supersonics as well as introduce the long-rumored NBA franchise in Vegas. That franchise has been long connected to LeBron James, and given that he'll likely be retired by that point, it's safe to assume that if he is as interested as reports suggest, he'll play some part in that organization upon arrival in the league.

Ultimately, expansion has been a long-time coming for the NBA with so much talent around the league and more entering year after year, and while it's still a few years away if it is approved, this would give many NBA fans something to look forward to.
