JJ Reddick Reveals LeBron James' Best Role On This Lakers Team
Mar 18, 2026
For the past two decades, LeBron James has been the No. 1 player in the NBA, cementing his status as a top-three player in NBA history in Cleveland, Miami and most recently, Los Angeles. In that time, he's won four NBA Championships, but at 41-years of age, he's clearly no longer the player that won all those accolades earlier in his illustrious career.
Unfortunately, many fans continue to call him out for wanting to remain that No. 1 option, with the Lakers chemistry and play clearly taking a hit when he's on the floor with them. Given his injuries, they have flourished with the duo of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves leading the way, and while James is still a great player, the team are still finding the best way to utilize him late in his career.
Now, Head Coach JJ Reddick has opened up on LeBron's best role, making it clear that to succeed, he needs to be the third option for this team.
“The best thing for our team is LeBron being the third-highest used player”
Given how long he's spent as the NBA's dominant force, it may not be easy for James to accept that role, but given the play of Doncic and Reaves, it's the only way forward for Los Angeles.

On top of all that, James is a free agent this summer, while both Reaves and Doncic are expected to play a huge role in the Lakers future, so if they want to be successful now and in the years to come, this is clearly the role that he needs to accept.
