Anthony Davis Talks About Entering Training Camp Out of Shape, Oh the Irony

When the Dallas Mavericks did the unthinkable and traded away franchise star Luka Dončić, everyone thought it was one of the dumbest moves in NBA history. As the Mavericks tried to explain what everyone knows in an inexplicable trade, one of the factors they pointed to was Luka Dončić’s issues staying in shape.

Now, ironically, Anthony Davis, the star that the Mavericks traded Luka for, is also under scrutiny for his body. Davis was seen at training camp heavier than usual, something that could be a concern for someone with a long injury history.

This is what Davis had to say about his preseason body:

“I feel good. I kind of almost do that going into every season, because I put on so much weight over the summer. Then, by the time November comes, I'm usually like 255, 258. I never want to come in at my playing weight, because then I lose weight during the season and then I'm too small. I lose about 10 to 12 pounds very quickly. During camp, I already lost five pounds — all the running and playing. So I'm never concerned about that. I feel great. I'm moving great. I feel good.”

While Davis doesn’t seem to believe he is out of shape, the irony of him coming into training camp heavy is undeniable. Meanwhile, Luka Dončić has entered Lakers training camp in the best shape of his life.

If Davis struggles to get in shape and Luka thrives with his new body, it is going to cause even further embarrassment for the Mavericks. Even if Davis does get into shape, it looks like Luka is determined to make the Mavericks regret their decision. Davis doesn’t seem to have the same inspiration.
